The purpose of the reproductive systems is to ensure the propagation of the species. In the reproductive systems, gonads produce gametes and hormones. In males, the gonads are the testes that produce gametes called spermatozoa (sperm). In females, the gonads are the ovaries that produce gametes called oocytes that mature into ova.
Reproductive ducts transport gametes and accessory glands and organs secrete fluids. The external genitalia conduct gametes to the female in males and receive them in females. Fertilization occurs when the nuclei of ovum and sperm join together to form a zygote. Fertilization produces an embryo that develops into a fetus (at two months) within the female uterus. The emergence of a new individual from its female parent is birth.
