In the female, ovaries produce oocytes that mature into ova and synthesize hormones (estrogen and progesterone). Fallopian (uterine) tubes transport the ova to meet the sperm. The uterus provides a site for implantation, nourishment, and development of the fertilized ovum. The vagina is a tubular, muscular canal lined with a mucous membrane. It extends from cervix to the exterior. The vagina receives the penis, serves as a birth canal and is the outlet for menstrual flow. The external genital organs are collectively called the vulva.
