Neuronal Reflexes

Afferent_(PSF)

Reflexes are the primary functional response of the nervous system. Somatic reflexes control skeletal muscles (soma means body). Visceral reflexes control body organs (viscera). A reflex arc is the wiring of a reflex. It consists of a receptor that sends signals through an afferent neuron to an integrating center in the CNS that responds with signals that pass through an efferent (motor) neuron to an effector, such as a muscle or a gland. Reflexes may be somatic (with output to skeletal muscles) or visceral (output to body organs).
