Endocrine control is due to chemicals (hormones) that travel all over the body. The responses to hormones are of slower onset and longer-lasting than those in the nervous system. Thus hormones act on organs to control long-term physiological processes, such as reproduction, growth, and metabolism. Even though hormones circulate throughout the body, they are highly specific. Only cells with receptors for particular hormones respond to their influence.
