Simple sugars and amino acids are absorbed into the capillaries of the villi. Blood vessels from the intestinal villi pass first to the liver through the hepatic portal vein, where they are processed.
Fatty acids are resynthesized into triglycerides and packaged as chylomicrons in the cells lining the intestine. The chylomicrons are secreted from the cells and enter the lacteals, forming a milky chyle. The lacteals merge to form larger lymphatic vessels that empty into the subclavian vein through the thoracic duct.
