Lactation is the production and release of milk. Alveoli are milk-secreting glands located within the lobules of the breast. Oxytocin causes milk ejection during nursing by contraction of myoepithelial cells around the lactiferours ducts. Prolactin stimulates milk secretion for the next feed. Colustrum is a thin milk released the first few days after birth.
