NK (natural killer) cells are specialized lymphocytes that patrol the body in the circulation. They recognize missing or altered MHC (major histocompatability complex) markers that are on the surface of normal body cells. Their primary mechanism of killing foreign cells is the release of perforin. Perforin punches holes in membranes, causing cell death. Perforins are also produced by cytotoxic T cells.
